Le Blanc
A moment to unwind in the city.
At Le Blanc in Kyoto's Minami Ward, meticulous culinary touches elevate classic yoshoku, from an omurice made with ketchup cooked directly into the rice to pot-baked griby capped in fluffy butter roll dough.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The omurice at Le Blanc is built on a distinctive chicken rice that is cooked together with ketchup, mellowing the sauce's sharp acidity. With its gentle, rounded flavor, the rice is draped in soft eggs and finished with a lightly sweet sauce, yielding a dish where every element comes together harmoniously.
Requiring about 30 minutes in the oven, the pot-baked dish known as griby is another specialty shaped by a thoughtful approach to baking. Rather than the customary puff pastry, the kitchen seals the pot with butter roll dough, which bakes into a fluffy, springy crust whose mild sweetness pairs naturally with the rich stew underneath.
The satisfyingly hearty hamburg steak is gently sautéed over low heat, often ordered as a set alongside rice and a soup made from whole Hokkaido pumpkin, skin included. The menu offers an array of labor-intensive yoshoku staples, from a comforting doria combining plump shrimp with house-made cream sauce to carefully simmered borscht.
The interior features welcoming counter seating for solo diners as well as tables for groups, where chatting with the chef about the ideas behind the cooking adds to the charm of the meal.
